R.I.P. Adam

Overnight, our eldest rat, Adam died. He was somewhat over two, not bad for a "free surprise inside" pet-store rat. I'm sure his genes were stacked against him: his brother Ace died much younger, and Adam had an inoperable mass in his chest.

He was a great rat. What I'll always remember is what a fast learner he was. After he was moved from my study to the living-room, he quickly developed rodentist tendencies. I encouraged this, until he got so enthusiastic that he would keep licking my tongue until my mouth dried out. Then I only had to discourage hims three or four times, and he barely tried. I know human beings who do not accommodate themselves to a new situation nearly that fast!

I feel I ignored him a bit in the past couple of weeks, but I have been both sick and working a lot. He was in womzilla's study, and W. says he gave Adam lots of love and lots of noms. We did manage to keep his weight up despite his bad health, an accomplishment I feel good about. Adam did not at all mind being in the hospital cage alone, and--perhaps ever adaptable--he enjoyed eating and sleeping, so he had a good end of life.

Happier news, but that goes in another post. Adam, rest easy.
