Confession
I actively enjoy leaving the refrigerator door open while I pour milk, spoon some food out of a container, or otherwise use something I will be putting right back.

Most of the time I prefer to be eco-friendly, with a sense of accomplishment rather than resentment. When I'm not, usually I've made a conscious decision, as when I keep lights turned on all over the house during winter because I need light to avoid seasonal affective disorder. Even then, I don't enjoy it, just benefit from it.

But I do get a small charge out of not having to close and re-open the refrigerator.

Mood: confessional, amused

We leave a lot of lights on too--I do it because I enjoy not stepping on one of the myriad of small pets in the house, but I wonder if Ranj does it for the same reason you do. I'll happily sit in a mostly-dark room because it feels good on my eyes, but he always wants lights.

I always take long showers.

I am otherwise eco-friendly to a fault, but I am practically physically incapable of taking a short shower.

Can't leave fridge door open without propping it, as it'll swing close on its own. Challenge is reaching in to remove (or insert, after grocery shopping) additional items before it's done so.

When I was a kid, back when refrigerators were steam-powered, we were taught that that was actually more energy-efficient, because you didn't have double the dead time of opening and closing the door, and you weren't doing two of the big door sweeps that pulled all the cold air out and blew warm air in.

Of course, back then we believed people could walk on the moon, so what did we know?

I go back and forth on this with the lights. Since it's not that long a while you're keeping the fridge open, it's not really clear that opening and closing and then opening again doesn't use more energy. I'm not very eco friendly on my water use, that's for sure.
